High Grade Sugilite (Rough)
Sugilite High Grade Rough Specimens - showcasing its uniform and intense purple color. Its deep-purple color comes from traces of manganese.
Sugilite is a rare purple cyclosilicate mineral that was named after the Japanese petrologist, Ken-ichi Sugi, who discovered it in 1944 in Iwagi Islet, Japan. These Japanese specimens were brownish-yellow grains and not suitable as gemstones. In 1979 the first significant deposit of purple, gem-quality material happened at a manganese mine in the Southern Kalahari Desert of South Africa. By 1980 Sugilite became classified as a rare gem, which caused its price to increase. Since then, only small additional deposits have been discovered worldwide, so it remains classified as a rare gem.
